Overview:  Measuring 12x9x6 inches, the Garmin GPSmap 276C looks just a bit larger than your letter-size paper.  The unit weighs 3.6 pounds or 1.6 kilograms.  It has a 12-channel receiver, it is WAAS enabled and it has a 256-color, 480 x 320 pixel LCD display with backlighting.  Out of the box, it comes with a basemap (interstates, cities, tide stations, U.S. coastline information), a lithium-ion battery, power cable plus AC adapter, a USB cable for connecting to a computer and other compatible devices, a product manual and reference, and a trip manager CD.

This GPS receiver gives you your location and it guides you to your chosen destination through specific directions.  It is ideal for use for both ground and sea travel.  It tells you when you are on or off track.  With a speaker plugged in, this unit will give you voice prompts and audible warnings.  The database is also expandable by plugging the unit to a computer and downloading additional maps from CD-ROMs and other compatible sources.

What You’ll Love:  This device is definitely accurate as it is able to accept correction data from Wide Area Augmentation System (WAAS) satellites.  Its battery gives you hours of navigation aid, and you can easily recharge it when spent.  The large display is easy to read, even at night.  This unit is also very flexible, as you can carry it with you on hiking trips, use it while traveling on your motorcycle, mount it on your car’s dashboard, and use it when out on your boat.  This is definitely an all-around GPS navigation tool.

Full Disclosure:  Get another type of GPS navigator if you plan on using it mainly for automobile travel.  This unit, for all its capabilities, is pretty basic.  You will have to get the detailed maps, the speaker, the mount, and the memory card for the best results on the road.  This will increase the already high price ($459.99) of the basic GPS unit.
