Portable Hard Drive Extra Easy: My Passport Essential 320GB from Western Digital
Tell A Friend
If you’re a typical 21st century, technology-dependent human being, then it is safe to assume that your computer pretty much holds your entire life in its memory. It is also safe to say that should your computer suddenly go haywire, you would either: a.) kill yourself, or b.) curse to high heavens and shout “Why me, why me!?”
Unfortunately these things do happen – and just right before you back up all your files too. Bummer. With the Western Digital My Passport Essential 320 GB Portable USB Hard Drive, it’s easier and simpler than ever to backup important files from your computer.
Overview: As its name suggests, this is a portable hard disk with a hefty 320 gigabytes of storage capacity. Yup. It’s bigger than your normal computer’s hard drive. Physically, it looks like your passport, measuring only 5 by 3.1 inches. It is only 0.6 inches thick and weighs only 3.7 ounces. It comes with a USB cable, your main interface to your computer. It doesn’t require its own power source for it uses the USB cable itself to draw power from the machine you’re backing up. Installed and ready to use is the backup software. When you plug it in, the software install utility will automatically pop up. Just follow the instructions to install the software on your computer. Installation is necessary only once.
What You’ll Love: It is extremely lightweight, small and portable. It is also capable of storing huge amounts of data. It can be used with any machine that has a USB port. It is also compatible with Windows Vista, XP and the Mac OS X. It also looks the talk; in other words, it looks every bit like the modern, classy gadget that it is. All in all, a gadget that data hogs will do anything to have. Now you can honestly say, you hold your life in your hands.
Full Disclosure: Unfortunately, it doesn’t come with its own case. A protective case is essential to protect the gadget from moisture, dust, dirt, and shock. The fact that you have to buy the case that should have come with the drive is a major inconvenience, not to mention, it means more expense.
The surface has a tendency to graze easily, so be careful about putting it near your key and other objects that can scratch it. Oh, why didn’t the manufacturer think of including the case?
The data transfer rate, moreover, is a bit of a letdown. It can go really slow for big file transfers. Have patience, says Yoda to Luke Skywalker (disclaimer: although perhaps not in those exact words).
